Dr. Jay Stewart is an ophthalmologist who specializes in treating disorders of the retina and vitreous (the thick transparent substance that fills the center of the eye). His expertise includes conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, ocular trauma, retinal detachment, retinal vascular diseases and uveitis (swelling of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye).

In his research, Stewart studies diabetic retinopathy, drug delivery to the eye, and the permeability and biomechanics of eye tissues.

Stewart earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School and completed a residency in ophthalmology at UCSF. He completed a fellowship at the Doheny Eye Institute and won the vitreoretinal surgery award from the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation, which funds outstanding young scholars.

Stewart is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists and Retina Society.

    Dr. Stewart is probably one of the top retinal experts in the country. I wish he had the time to chat more, he's the kind of guy you would like to know better but he is efficient and professional and good and gets a lot of people seen. I get it. I just like and trust him but he needs to spend his time doing the shots and decision making and others are equally qualified answering more of my needs for support or anxious questions. I don't want him to be different!

    I count on (and am not disappointed ever) Dr Jay Stewart's professionalism, expertise and wisdom about eye science and its application to my health. I also deeply appreciate his abilities as an educator - he takes the time to talk out loud with me as he reviews images, always at a level that I can understand. I have witnessed him doing that with staff and residents always calibrating how to explain something. I rate his care, over many years now, as the category that is not on this scale "6" for excellent. I only hope that Dr Stewart remains "married" to UCSF for years to come.

    After working with the nurse/assistants I saw the doctor shortly after which was a very good meeting. He took the time to explain my situation in a way that was easier for me to understand.     Dr Jay Stewart s the best, so good in fact, I recommended him that day to a patient who had seen another eye specialist and was actually crying in the hallway because of the way he was treated and the last of information he was given. I told him if he got an appointment with Dr. Stewart, he'd have a totally different experience!

    Consistently, for years now, Jay Stewart MD has provided me with care and education and professional expertise that is beyond the above scales - #6 and excellent is closer to reality.
